BCNet is the Barbour Community Network

BCNet is a nonprofit organization interested in bringing technology and especially the benefits of technology

to all the communities in and around Barbour County, West Virginia.

  • Initial efforts focused on technology awareness and on using the Philippi Cable System as a backbone to electronically link schools, organizations, local government offices, and businesses.
  • Subsequent efforts resulted in the development of this Domino web server that contains a growing amount of Barbour Community Information.
  • Projects have included the creation of web pages for local businesses and organizations.
  • An Internet dial-up service providing local access to residents of Barbour County was developed and grew to over three hundred customers. This was sold to the City of Philippi once it needed full-time attention.
  • We have worked on high speed connectivity using cable modems through the Philippi cable system.
  • We have offered and will continue to provide public classes on the Internet and technology.
  • BCNet has sponsored and helped install the Philippi After School Lab.  We will continue to seek to establish these facilities in other parts of the County.
  • A second, new server with updated hardware and software has been brought into service.
  • A computer lab wasinstalled in Junior as a result of a grant from Verizon.
  • BCNet is a partner in a grant application for fixed wireless broadband services.
  • BCNet has supported the City of Philippi's successful rural development grant for broadband access via the city cable system.
  • An in-class computer system (computer/projector/printer) was given to a Barbour County teacher as a result of our local competitive computer classroom grant project.

BCNet will continue to grow and leverage these resources for the betterment of the Barbour Community.  Suggestions and partners are welcomed.
